HTMX vs Next.js 2026: Hypermedia or SPA? The Decision

Q: What is HTMX and how does it actually work?

HTMX is a small JavaScript library — roughly 14KB with no build step — that extends HTML so that any element can issue an HTTP request and swap the response directly into the page. Instead of writing a fetch call inside a JavaScript component, you declare the intent as HTML attributes: an element carries hx-post (or hx-get, hx-put, hx-delete) pointing at a URL, hx-target naming the element to update, and hx-swap describing how to replace it. When the user interacts, HTMX issues the request, the server responds with an HTML fragment rather than JSON, and HTMX swaps that fragment into the specified target. The architectural consequence is the important part, not the syntax: because the server sends HTML, the server owns the application state. There is no client-side store to keep synchronised with the server, no serialization boundary between frontend and backend, no duplicate validation logic in two languages, and no API contract to design and version — the "API" is simply the pages and fragments your application already renders. This is the hypermedia approach, a return to REST as originally described, where the server response itself tells the client what actions are now available rather than the client hard-coding a state machine that mirrors the server. HTMX is backend-agnostic: Django, Rails, Laravel, Go, Spring, Express, or anything else that can render HTML works identically, because HTMX does not care what produced the markup. For local interactivity that should not involve a round-trip — a dropdown toggle, a tab switch — it composes with a small library like Alpine.js, keeping the "islands of interactivity" pattern without a full client framework.

Q: Is HTMX just PHP or ASP thinking with better marketing?

Partly yes — and that is a compliment rather than a dismissal, though "partly" is doing real work in the sentence. The similarity is genuine and worth conceding openly: classic PHP, ASP, JSP, and Rails all generated HTML on the server, and HTMX unapologetically returns to that model after a decade of moving rendering into the browser. Anyone who shipped server-rendered applications in 2005 recognises the shape immediately, and the "we went in a circle" reaction is fair rather than ignorant. What is genuinely different is granularity and discipline. The 2005 model did full-page reloads, so any interactivity meant either a page refresh or hand-rolled AJAX with jQuery imperatively mutating the DOM — the spaghetti that motivated the move to component frameworks in the first place. HTMX provides partial page updates declared declaratively in markup: you swap one fragment while the rest of the page keeps its scroll position, focus, and media playback, with transitions, and without writing imperative DOM manipulation. It is also theoretically honest in a way the PHP era was not — it is REST-with-hypermedia done properly, where responses carry the available actions rather than the client duplicating the server’s state machine. Three further differences matter practically: it composes with modern CSS and small libraries like Alpine.js for genuine local interactivity, it works with any backend rather than binding you to one runtime, and it arrives after the industry has learned empirically what client-side state actually costs in bugs and maintenance. So the accurate verdict is that HTMX is the 2005 architecture with the 2026 lessons applied — the circle is real, but it is a spiral: the same position, one level up. Dismissing it as "just PHP" is as lazy as pretending it is a brand-new paradigm.

Q: When should I choose HTMX over Next.js?

Choose HTMX when your application is fundamentally server-owned data with modest interactivity, and your team’s strength is the backend rather than JavaScript. The clearest fits: CRUD dashboards, admin panels, and internal tools — forms, tables, filters, and detail views where the data lives on the server and changes when someone submits something; content-driven sites and catalogues where server rendering is natural; and any product where a small team wants to ship quickly in one language without designing an API layer. The wins in those cases are substantial and compounding: no client-state synchronisation bugs because there is no client state, no API contract to design and keep in sync, no build pipeline or bundler to maintain, tiny payloads and fast first render, and dramatically less total code — which is the cost that actually accumulates over a product’s life. Team language is a decisive input: if your team writes Python, Go, Ruby, Java, or PHP all day, HTMX lets you stay in one language and one codebase rather than staffing or context-switching into a JavaScript frontend. Conversely, do not choose HTMX when the product genuinely needs rich client state — collaborative editors, canvas and drawing tools, dashboards with live interactive charts, offline-capable PWAs, or realtime collaborative UIs — because those are exactly the problems client frameworks exist to solve and fragment swapping will fight the model. Also weigh two practical realities honestly: the hiring pool is much smaller (HTMX sits around 7% developer adoption against React’s 40%+), and if a native mobile app will share the same backend you need a JSON API regardless, which erases a large part of HTMX’s no-API-layer advantage.

Q: Is Next.js overkill for a simple CRUD application?

Frequently yes, and the honest way to test it is to ask what the framework machinery is buying you for that specific product. A typical business CRUD application is forms, tables, filters, and detail views: the data lives on the server, changes when someone submits something, and needs almost no client-side state beyond what is on screen. Building that as a client application means reimplementing routing, data fetching, caching, and state management in the browser, shipping a bundle to run it, and maintaining a build pipeline and dependency tree — a meaningful amount of engineering to display a table that changes twice a day. That said, the "overkill" verdict needs a 2026 caveat, because the Next.js people picture is often the 2018 one. Modern Next.js with React Server Components server-renders by default and only ships JavaScript for components explicitly marked as client components, so a well-built Next.js CRUD app can be much lighter than the SPA-era version and is not automatically bloated. The real costs that remain are conceptual and organisational rather than purely payload size: the server-versus-client component model, hydration behaviour, several caching layers that teams routinely misconfigure, framework churn that makes upgrades real work, and the requirement that your backend is JavaScript or that you run a second backend language. Weighed against that, Next.js buys a very large ecosystem (component libraries, auth, payments, testing), a deep hiring pool, first-class TypeScript across the stack, strong SEO and image tooling, and skills that carry over to React Native. The decision framework: if the app is genuinely server-owned data with light interactivity and your team is backend-strong, HTMX will ship faster and leave less to maintain. If you need the ecosystem, the hiring pool, or you have real client-state requirements coming on the roadmap, Next.js is justified even for a currently-simple CRUD app.

Q: What are the main disadvantages of HTMX in production?

Five real ones, worth knowing before you commit. First and most important: it is a poor fit for rich client state. Collaborative editors, canvas and drawing tools, complex interactive visualisations, offline-capable applications, and realtime multi-user UIs all require substantial state living in the browser, and swapping HTML fragments fights that model rather than serving it — these are precisely the problems React and similar frameworks were built for. Second, ecosystem and components: React has an enormous library of prebuilt, battle-tested components, integrations, and patterns, while HTMX’s ecosystem is much thinner, so you will build more from scratch. Third, hiring and team ramp: with roughly 7% developer adoption against React’s 40%+, the talent pool is smaller and many developers trained in the last five years know React natively and hypermedia not at all, which is a genuine staffing and onboarding cost rather than a purity argument. Fourth, latency and server load: every interaction is a server round-trip, so user-perceived responsiveness depends on network conditions and server response time in a way that local client-state updates do not, and your servers handle rendering work a client framework would have distributed to users’ devices — for high-interaction UIs or high-latency user populations this matters. Fifth, and the honest one that HTMX advocates should concede: you can absolutely write unmaintainable HTMX. Scattering endpoint logic across templates, creating a sprawl of fragment routes with no organising convention, and duplicating markup are exactly the PHP-era failure modes, and HTMX does not prevent them — large-application conventions and testing patterns are less established than in the React world, so discipline is yours to supply. Additionally, offline support is essentially off the table, since hypermedia assumes the server is reachable.

Q: Does HTMX or Next.js have better SEO and performance?

Both can be excellent, and in 2026 the difference is smaller than the debate implies — because both server-render by default, which is the thing SEO actually cares about. HTMX serves plain server-rendered HTML on the initial request, which is ideal for crawlers: the content is in the response, no JavaScript execution required, and the payload is small (the library itself is around 14KB with no framework bundle). First render tends to be very fast because there is little JavaScript to download, parse, and execute, which helps Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint. Next.js with React Server Components also server-renders and streams HTML, and it ships materially less JavaScript than the SPA era because only explicit client components hydrate — plus it brings first-class SEO tooling (metadata APIs, sitemap generation, structured-data patterns) and strong image and font optimisation that meaningfully improve Core Web Vitals in practice. Where each can go wrong: an HTMX app can still be slow if the server is slow, since every interaction is a round-trip and there is no client-side caching layer to absorb repeat requests; a Next.js app can still ship a heavy bundle if the team marks too much as client components or pulls in large dependencies, and its several caching layers are easy to misconfigure in ways that hurt both freshness and speed. The honest guidance is to stop treating SEO and performance as the deciding factor between them — both are capable, and measured Core Web Vitals on your actual pages will tell you more than any framework claim. Decide on state locality, team language, ecosystem needs, and roadmap; then measure and budget performance in CI regardless of which you chose, because implementation quality dominates framework choice on this axis.

Q: What is the future of HTMX — is it a fad or a lasting shift?

The realistic trajectory is that HTMX itself remains a meaningful niche tool while the idea behind it becomes mainstream — and those are different outcomes worth separating. The idea is clearly winning: the pure single-page application is becoming a niche choice rather than the default, and the industry is converging on a hybrid model of server-rendered skeletons with islands of interactivity only where instant local feedback genuinely matters. HTMX is one expression of that shift; Next.js with React Server Components is another; Astro’s islands architecture is a third. They arrive from different directions at the same conclusion: shipping a full client runtime to render a table was always overkill. That convergence means the hypermedia argument has largely been won even where HTMX is not adopted. HTMX’s own prospects have genuine strengths and genuine risks. Strengths: it depends on web standards rather than a framework roadmap, so HTMX code written today will still work when today’s frameworks are three major versions on — durability is an underrated feature in a field with constant churn; it has strong developer satisfaction among those who have used it and growing mindshare (crossing 47,000 GitHub stars); and its simplicity is structural rather than a phase. Risks: it is a comparatively small project with concentrated maintainership; its ecosystem may never approach React’s depth; and hiring will stay harder while React dominates training and job markets. A 2026 wrinkle cuts the same way: AI coding assistants write React exceptionally well because the training corpus is vast, which quietly advantages the mainstream choice for teams generating a lot of code. Net: not a fad — a durable niche with an outsized influence on how everyone else builds.

Q: Can I use HTMX and React together in the same application?

Yes, and for many teams that hybrid is the most pragmatic answer — the frameworks are not mutually exclusive, and the islands-of-interactivity pattern is exactly designed for this. The common shape: render the application’s structure, navigation, forms, tables, and detail views server-side with HTMX handling fragment updates, then mount a React (or Vue, or Svelte) component only in the specific places that genuinely need rich client state — an interactive chart, a drag-and-drop board, a rich-text editor, a complex multi-step configurator. Those islands manage their own state internally and communicate with the server through their own endpoints, while the surrounding page stays simple hypermedia. This gives you HTMX’s simplicity for the 80% of the interface that is server-owned data, and the full power of a component framework for the 20% that truly needs it, without paying SPA complexity across the whole application. Practical considerations for making it work: keep the boundary explicit and documented so it is obvious which parts of the UI are hypermedia and which are client islands; avoid trying to share state across the boundary (if an island needs to trigger a page-level update, have it issue a request and let HTMX swap the affected fragment, rather than building a shared client store); be deliberate about bundling so island code is loaded only on the pages that use it; and accept that you now have two mental models in the codebase, which is a real onboarding cost that needs to be justified by the islands earning their complexity. Many teams also use the lighter combination of HTMX plus Alpine.js for small local interactions, reserving a full React island only for genuinely complex widgets. The failure mode to avoid is islands proliferating until you have an SPA with extra steps.
