Adapter Pattern Microservices 2026: Protocol Bridges, Anti-Corruption Layer

Q: What is the adapter pattern in microservices?

The adapter pattern places a dedicated translation component between two systems that need to communicate but speak incompatible protocols, formats, or semantics. The adapter parses the source representation, extracts the meaningful content, and re-emits it in the target representation. Common use cases include protocol translation (SOAP↔REST, gRPC↔REST, AMQP↔Kafka), schema translation between systems that disagree about field names or structure, identity translation (API keys to JWTs), and vendor abstraction where a third-party service is hidden behind a clean internal interface. The adapter shields each side from the other's idiosyncrasies, allows each to evolve independently, and isolates the translation complexity in one place where it can be properly tested, monitored, and replaced.

Q: What is the difference between an inbound adapter, an outbound adapter, and an anti-corruption layer?

An inbound adapter sits between an external system and the internal services, translating incoming requests into the internal request shape — for example, an inbound SOAP adapter that translates partner SOAP requests into internal REST calls, or a webhook adapter that translates payment provider webhooks into internal events. An outbound adapter sits between internal services and an external system, translating internal calls into the external system's protocol — for example, an outbound SendGrid adapter that handles the SendGrid-specific request format on behalf of an internal email service. An anti-corruption layer (ACL) is a richer adapter applied at the boundary between two domains with different conceptual models, typically used during Strangler Fig migrations to prevent the legacy domain model from corrupting the new architecture. ACLs may include caching, partial denormalisation, business-rule application, and multi-table joins to reshape legacy data into the new domain shape.

Q: When should I deploy an adapter as its own service versus embedding it as a library?

For trivial adapters — a single field-renaming function, a simple format conversion — embedding as a library inside the calling service is appropriate. For any adapter that performs non-trivial translation, vendor abstraction, or protocol bridging, deploy as a first-class service with its own deployment lifecycle, monitoring, and team ownership. The reason is that adapters with real complexity (retry logic, error mapping, vendor-specific edge cases, observability) accumulate enough functionality that they deserve their own service boundary. The cost of an additional service is real, but the benefits — isolated deployment, independent scaling, clear ownership, the ability to roll back the adapter without affecting the rest of the system — outweigh the cost for any adapter that needs to evolve over time. The other test is reuse: an adapter used by multiple services should always be its own service to avoid version skew.

Q: How do I make an adapter idempotent for webhook delivery?

Webhook providers retry, message queues redeliver, and partners re-send — adapters are particularly prone to duplicate-delivery scenarios and must be idempotent. The standard pattern: extract or generate an idempotency key from the inbound request (the webhook event ID is ideal when provided, otherwise a hash of the payload or a synthetic key from message metadata), check the key against a Redis-backed deduplication store before doing any work, perform the translation and downstream effects only if the key is new, and mark the key as processed only after the downstream effects succeed. The order matters: idempotency check before work, work before mark, mark only after success. This ensures that a failed publish leaves the key unmarked so a retry will succeed, while a duplicate delivery after a successful processing is skipped without double-effect. See the dedicated idempotency pattern article for implementation details.

Q: Should adapter mapping logic live in code or in configuration?

Field-mapping logic should live as code (or as code-reviewed configuration files in the repository), not as runtime-mutable data in a database table. The temptation to make mappings "configurable so we can change them without a deploy" leads inevitably to ungoverned changes that produce production incidents nobody can diagnose because the mapping that was correct yesterday is different today, with no clear audit trail of what changed. Mapping changes should go through code review, run through the same tests as code, and deploy through the same pipeline. The adapter's mapping logic is part of its contract, not part of its operational state. The exception is genuinely operational data — for example, a list of partner IDs that should be routed to a specific endpoint — which is operational state and belongs in configuration; but the structural mapping rules themselves belong in code.

Q: How do I prevent an adapter from accumulating business logic over time?

The pattern is to keep adapters narrow and to spin off any business logic that creeps in into a proper domain service that the adapter calls. The test is whether the translation logic requires understanding the business meaning of fields. Pure structural translation (rename, restructure, format conversion, type coercion) belongs in the adapter. Logic that says "if the payment provider returned this combination of fields, treat the order as fraudulent" belongs in a fraud-detection service that the adapter calls. Code review discipline is the primary defence: review every adapter change with the question "is this translation or is this business logic?" and push back when business logic appears. Periodic adapter audits — once a quarter, walk through each adapter and identify any logic that has crept beyond pure translation — catch creeping complexity before it becomes entrenched. When business logic is identified, extract it to a proper service in the next sprint rather than letting it accumulate.

Q: How should adapters handle versioning when the external system supports multiple API versions?

Expose explicit versioned adapter endpoints (for example /adapters/stripe/v1/... and /adapters/stripe/v2/...) and require callers to choose explicitly. Implicit version selection — where the adapter has conditional logic that branches on inferred caller identity, the request payload shape, or some other signal — is a debugging nightmare and a source of subtle bugs. Explicit versioning is a few extra characters in the URL or routing config and produces clear, debuggable behaviour. When the external system deprecates a version, the adapter should continue to expose the deprecated version for a transition period (with metrics that track usage of the deprecated path), give callers a migration deadline, and eventually return a clear deprecation error rather than silently changing behaviour. Document the version lifecycle clearly in the adapter's API documentation.

Q: How does the adapter pattern relate to API gateways and service mesh?

The patterns operate at different layers and complement each other. The API gateway often hosts simple inbound adapters for external clients via gateway-level transformation plugins (header rewrites, format conversion, simple field mapping); for complex translations, dedicated adapter services behind the gateway are preferable. The service mesh handles infrastructure concerns at the service-to-service layer (mTLS, retries, observability) and does not perform translation — protocol or schema translation is not a mesh concern. The Ambassador pattern is a specific deployment shape for outbound adapters where the adapter is co-deployed as a sidecar with the calling service, useful when the adapter is per-service rather than shared. The Strangler Fig pattern typically uses anti-corruption layer adapters at the boundary between the new and legacy systems during migration. The architectural decision is which pattern owns each translation: gateway for simple ingress translations, dedicated adapter services for complex translations, ambassador sidecars for per-service outbound translations.
