Q: What is PHP2Shell?

PHP2Shell is the name used for two remote code execution vulnerabilities in the PHP engine, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, each rated 9.2 under CVSS v4.0. The PHP project published fixes on 21 October 2026. One involves out-of-memory corruption and the other stale global state reused by a later request on the same worker. Because they sit in the engine, they affect PHP-FPM, mod_php, php-cgi, FrankenPHP and LiteSpeed setups.

The PHP project released 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35 on 21 October 2026. Most PHP site compromises come through plugins and themes rather than the engine. Keep an inventory of every plugin with its maintainer and last update, replace abandoned ones, never install nulled builds, make the code directory read-only to the web server, block PHP execution in upload folders, deploy from pinned images instead of editing servers, and monitor payment pages for script changes. Those controls also blunt the next engine-level bug.
