Q: What is a data contract?

A data contract is an explicit, machine-readable agreement between a data producer and its consumers that defines the shape and guarantees of the data crossing the boundary between them. It typically specifies four things plus ownership: the schema (field names, types, and nullability), the semantics (what fields mean — units, enumerations, formats, business rules), quality expectations (assertions such as non-null keys, uniqueness, and value ranges that must hold), and service-level guarantees (how fresh the data will be, how available, and how much notice consumers get before something is deprecated). The defining characteristic, and the reason a data contract is different from documentation, is that it is enforced by a machine rather than trusted as a convention. The contract lives in version control next to the code, and a change that violates it fails a build or is rejected at a boundary. That enforcement is what moves the responsibility for a breaking change onto the producer who makes it, instead of leaving it to fall on whichever downstream consumer happens to get paged when the pipeline breaks. Without enforcement, a data contract is just a wiki page with a fancier name.

Q: How is a data contract different from a schema?

A schema describes structure — the names, types, and nullability of fields — and a data contract contains a schema but is considerably more. The gap between the two is exactly where most silent data-quality failures live. A schema will tell you that a column called amount is an integer, but it will not tell you whether that integer is denominated in dollars or cents, and a producer who quietly switches from one to the other breaks nothing structurally while corrupting every downstream sum and average. A data contract captures that semantic layer: units, the allowed values of an enumeration, the format of a timestamp or country code, and the business meaning of each field. Beyond semantics it adds quality expectations — assertions like uniqueness, referential integrity, and value ranges that must hold for the data to be valid — and service-level guarantees such as freshness and a deprecation policy. Finally, and most importantly, a contract implies enforcement and ownership in a way a bare schema does not: it is the producer committing to uphold all of this at the boundary, checked automatically, whereas a schema is merely a description that says nothing about who is responsible when reality diverges from it.

Q: Who owns a data contract, the producer or the consumer?

The producer owns it, and that reversal of responsibility is the entire point of the pattern. In the common state of the world without contracts, the consumer effectively owns every break: a producer changes a column or its meaning, their own tests and deploy pass because from their side nothing looks wrong, and the failure surfaces hours later in a downstream pipeline, dashboard, or model, where a data engineer who had nothing to do with the change is paged to diagnose and work around it. That is both unfair and slow, because the person fixing the problem is the person with the least context about its cause. A data contract makes the producer commit to a set of guarantees at the boundary and, crucially, enforces those guarantees in the producer own continuous-integration pipeline. A change that would break the contract fails the producer build at the pull request, so the break is caught before it ships, by the person who introduced it, while the reasoning behind the change is still fresh in their mind. Ownership moving to the producer is what turns data reliability from a perpetual downstream firefight into an upstream guardrail, and it is why contracts succeed where consumer-side monitoring alone plateaus.

Q: What open standards exist for data contracts?

Two open standards have emerged so that teams do not have to invent their own format. The first is the Open Data Contract Standard, or ODCS, which is a Linux Foundation project governed under the Bitol initiative within LF AI & Data, currently at version 3.1.0 and released under the Apache 2.0 license. ODCS defines a structured document covering the fundamentals of a contract — schema, data quality, pricing, team and roles, service-level agreements, and infrastructure — so that a contract becomes a portable, machine-readable artifact rather than a bespoke YAML dialect per company. The second is the Data Contract Specification, hosted at datacontract.com, which is an open YAML-based format with an ecosystem of tooling for testing contracts against real data and generating code and documentation from them. Both are designed to sit in version control alongside the code that produces the data, and both are consumed by tooling that performs the actual enforcement. Choosing between them is less important than adopting one: the value is in having a standard, machine-readable representation that your CI, your schema registry, and your ingestion checks can all read, rather than a prose description that only humans can interpret and that therefore cannot block a bad change automatically.

Q: Where is a data contract actually enforced?

Enforcement happens at three gates, and a contract is only as strong as the gates you actually wire up, because a contract that is written but never checked provides false confidence rather than protection. The first and most important gate is the producer continuous-integration pipeline, where a change that violates the declared schema or semantics fails the build at the pull request. This is what dbt model contracts do when you set the contract to enforced: dbt refuses to build a model whose columns or types no longer match the declared shape, so the breaking change cannot merge. The second gate is the streaming boundary, where a schema registry enforces compatibility modes such as BACKWARD, FORWARD, and FULL, rejecting an incompatible Avro or Protobuf schema at publish time in a fraction of a second. The third gate is ingestion into the warehouse or lakehouse, where quality expectations run on load and either reject or quarantine rows that violate the contract rather than allowing them to poison downstream tables. The same contract document is read by all three; they are complementary rather than alternatives. Structural breaks are best caught at the first two gates, and semantic and quality violations at the first and third. The failure mode to avoid is writing a contract and enforcing it nowhere.

Q: Should every table have a data contract?

No, and trying to put a contract on every table is one of the fastest ways to make a data-contract initiative collapse. Contracts have a real cost: they deliberately slow producers down by making certain changes fail a build, and they require maintenance as legitimate requirements evolve. That cost is worth paying on the interfaces that many consumers depend on and whose breakage causes real pain — the customer dimension that a hundred dashboards read, the events table that feeds billing, the reference data that machine-learning features are built on. It is not worth paying on an internal staging table with a single consumer, or on transient intermediate models that no other team binds to. Spending contract effort uniformly across everything dilutes attention, generates political friction, and buries the high-value interfaces under a pile of low-value ceremony. The pragmatic approach is to treat contracts as a scarce resource allocated to crown-jewel interfaces: identify the boundaries where a silent break would hurt the most or the most people, put enforced contracts there first, demonstrate the reduction in incidents, and expand deliberately. Coverage is a means to reliability, not an end in itself, and blanket coverage usually buys less reliability than focused coverage of the interfaces that matter.

Q: How do data contracts handle breaking changes?

Data contracts do not forbid breaking changes — requirements genuinely evolve — they make breaking changes explicit, versioned, and negotiated instead of silent and sudden. A well-designed contract includes a versioning scheme and a deprecation policy as first-class parts of the agreement, so that when a producer genuinely needs to remove a field or change its meaning, they do so by publishing a new version of the contract and giving consumers a defined notice period to migrate, rather than by shipping the change and letting downstream pipelines discover it the hard way. In the meantime the enforcement gates hold the line: at the streaming boundary, schema-registry compatibility modes such as BACKWARD compatibility explicitly permit safe evolutions — like adding an optional field — while rejecting unsafe ones, so the registry itself encodes what counts as breaking. At the producer CI gate, an attempt to make a breaking change against the current contract version fails the build, forcing the producer to consciously bump the version and follow the deprecation process rather than sliding the change through unnoticed. The net effect is that breaking changes become a managed, communicated event with a migration window, which is the opposite of the default world where a breaking change is an unmanaged surprise that surfaces as a production incident. Without an explicit versioning and deprecation policy, a contract merely converts silent breaks into loud, abrupt ones.

Q: Do data contracts replace data quality monitoring?

No; they complement it, and understanding the division of labour is important because the two solve different halves of the problem. Data contracts are a preventive, shift-left control: they stop many classes of break from ever shipping by failing the producer build or rejecting an incompatible change at a boundary, which is the most effective place to catch a problem because it never reaches consumers at all. But contracts cannot anticipate everything. Data can degrade for reasons that no schema or semantic rule predicted — an upstream source going stale, a real-world distribution shifting, a subtle logic bug that produces valid-looking but wrong values, or an integration that silently stops delivering. That is where data quality monitoring earns its place: it observes the data in production, detects anomalies and freshness violations, and alerts when reality diverges from expectation, including in ways the contract did not foresee. The right architecture uses both — contracts to prevent the predictable, well-specified breaks at the source, and monitoring to detect the unpredictable ones downstream. Relying only on monitoring leaves you perpetually firefighting breaks that a contract would have prevented; relying only on contracts leaves you blind to the failures no contract could have specified in advance. Prevention plus detection, not one instead of the other, is the mature posture.
