To see why it matters, consider the naive alternative: serving one request per forward pass. LLM inference is memory-bandwidth-bound and the GPU has enormous parallel capacity, so processing a single request leaves most of the GPU idle during each pass — utilization in the low single digits. Static batching (waiting to collect a fixed batch, then processing it together) improves this but wastes time waiting for the batch to fill and stalls on the slowest request. Continuous batching, implemented by modern inference servers, keeps the GPU maximally busy: it interleaves many requests at the token level, so as soon as one request finishes generating, its slot is filled by a waiting request, and new arrivals join in-flight rather than waiting for the next batch. The result is that the same GPU serves many concurrent users at a throughput that can be several times higher than one-request-at-a-time serving, which directly raises utilization and lowers cost-per-token — utilization created from nothing but better scheduling, with no change to the model or the hardware. This is why adopting a serving framework that implements continuous batching is usually the single highest-return first step in an inference-cost optimization: it is a configuration and architecture change, not a capital expense, and it addresses the largest single source of per-GPU waste. It pairs with autoscaling (which handles the idle-fleet problem across GPUs) to attack both dimensions of the utilization problem — per-GPU efficiency and fleet-level idleness.
