Q: What is an AI weather foundation model?

It is a machine-learning model trained on decades of historical atmospheric analyses to predict how the global weather state evolves, step by step, without solving the physics equations directly at run time. Examples in operation or publication include ECMWF's AIFS, Google's WeatherNext family and GenCast, and Microsoft's Aurora. Once trained, inference is far cheaper than physics-based numerical weather prediction, which is why large ensembles and frequent refreshes have become practical.

Q: Is ECMWF's AIFS operational, and is it open?

Yes. ECMWF took AIFS Single into operations on 25 February 2025, running alongside its physics-based IFS, and later made the 51-member ensemble version, AIFS ENS, operational. ECMWF describes AIFS as an open model and says operational status means it is openly available with 24/7 support. Check ECMWF's open data terms for the specific products and licences that apply to your commercial use before you build on them.

Q: What is WeatherNext 3 and how do you access it?

WeatherNext 3 is Google's flagship operational AI weather model. Google's developer documentation describes 15-day global probabilistic forecasts initialised hourly across 64 ensemble members at up to 5 km resolution. Forecast data is delivered through Google Cloud Storage in Zarr format, Earth Engine and BigQuery, and Google also offers custom cloud inference and open research models. Review the commercial terms and verify skill on your own sites before relying on it.

Q: Are AI weather models more accurate than physics-based models?

On many headline scores, yes, but not uniformly. ECMWF reports AIFS ENS outperforms state-of-the-art physics-based models for many measures, including surface temperature with gains of up to 20%. However, AIFS ENS runs at 31 km against 9 km for the physics ensemble, and ECMWF says the physics system remains indispensable for high-resolution fields and coupled Earth-system processes. Accuracy at your sites and for your variables must be verified locally.

Q: Why does the ensemble matter more than the single forecast?

Because most business decisions have asymmetric costs. If being short of energy costs more than being long, the cost-minimising bid is a lower quantile of the forecast distribution, chosen from the ratio of the two costs, not the median. That calculation needs a calibrated distribution, which an ensemble provides. AI models made 51- and 64-member ensembles cheap and frequent, so the value comes from consuming probabilities rather than from a slightly better single number.

Q: What is forecast calibration and why do I need it?

Calibration is a statistical correction, trained on your own observations, that fixes both the bias and the spread of forecasts at each site and variable. Global models smooth out local effects such as valleys, coastal fog or convection, and raw ensembles are often under-dispersive near the surface, so their uncertainty bands are too narrow. Without spread calibration your P90 behaves like a lower quantile and you understate risk on exactly the bad days.

Q: Should my company train or fine-tune its own weather model?

Almost certainly not train one. Global weather models need data assimilation, large compute and a dedicated research team, and open operational models already exist. Fine-tuning a regional model is a narrower question and worth considering only after a calibrated pipeline over existing forecasts has stopped improving. For most energy, insurance and logistics teams, the competitive edge is the site calibration, transfer functions and decision layer, which no vendor can build for you.

Q: When should we not switch to AI weather forecasts?

Do not switch if your downstream systems only accept a single number, because you will pay the integration cost and gain nothing; build the probabilistic decision layer first. Be cautious if your exposure is dominated by rare extremes that history-trained models may handle poorly, and keep a physics-based reference in the loop. And if a contract, grid code or regulator names a specific forecast source, you can add AI forecasts for internal decisions but cannot replace the named source.
