Computer Vision in Enterprise 2026: Manufacturing, Healthcare, Retail

Q: What is the best computer vision model for manufacturing defect detection?

YOLO v10 and v11 remain the standard choice for real-time defect detection on production lines because they deliver sub-20ms inference on edge hardware (NVIDIA Jetson Orin, TX2) while achieving mAP scores above 0.92 on standard industrial inspection benchmarks. For use cases where the defect taxonomy is not well-defined in advance or defects are rare and varied, anomaly detection approaches using autoencoders trained on defect-free images are more practical than supervised detection because they do not require large labelled defect datasets. For high-complexity inspection tasks requiring fine-grained classification of defect severity, combine a YOLO detection backbone with a ViT classification head on the detected region of interest.

Q: Is computer vision in radiology approved for clinical use?

Yes, numerous computer vision radiology AI tools have received regulatory clearance for clinical use. In the United States, FDA 510(k) clearance exists for tools detecting intracranial haemorrhage, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, and fractures on chest X-ray and CT. In Europe, CE marking under the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) applies. In Singapore, HSA approval pathways are documented for AI-as-software-as-a-medical-device. These tools are positioned as clinical decision support — they flag findings for radiologist review rather than replacing radiologist interpretation. In the UK, NHS England has guidance on deployed radiology AI covering validation requirements, integration standards, and governance for clinical AI tools.

Q: How much does an enterprise computer vision deployment cost?

Costs vary significantly by scale and complexity. A single manufacturing inspection station including camera hardware, edge compute, model development, and integration typically costs 25,000 to 80,000 USD to deploy, with annual operating costs of 5,000 to 15,000 USD. A hospital-wide radiology AI deployment including PACS integration, validation, and staff training runs 150,000 to 500,000 USD per site. A retail CV deployment covering shelf intelligence and traffic analytics in a 3,000 sqft store costs 40,000 to 120,000 USD in hardware alone, plus 20,000 to 60,000 USD for integration and model customisation. Cloud inference costs for non-edge deployments add 0.01 to 0.10 USD per image depending on model size and cloud provider. For sizing AI infrastructure more broadly, the AI infrastructure sizing guide covers GPU, memory, and storage requirements for production CV workloads.

Q: How do you handle privacy when deploying computer vision in retail?

Four practices are non-negotiable for GDPR-compliant retail CV. First, blur or anonymise faces in real time at the camera or edge device before any image leaves the capture location — this must be genuine anonymisation, not pixelation that can be reversed. Second, do not retain raw video footage longer than operationally necessary (typically 24 to 72 hours for incident review purposes). Third, conduct a Data Protection Impact Assessment before deployment and document it. Fourth, display clear signage informing customers that CV systems are in use. Facial recognition for customer identification is an entirely different legal category (biometric data under GDPR Article 9) and requires explicit consent, which is operationally impractical in most retail settings. Anonymised traffic and dwell time analytics — measuring aggregate flow and time, not tracking individuals — is achievable within GDPR constraints without consent.

Q: What edge hardware is recommended for enterprise computer vision in 2026?

For high-throughput manufacturing inspection (10 to 100 images per second), NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX (16 GB, 100 TOPS) or Orin AGX (64 GB, 275 TOPS) are the benchmark edge platforms, offering the best balance of inference performance, CUDA compatibility with cloud-trained models, and industrial temperature/vibration ratings. For lower-power applications (retail shelf scanning, safety monitoring), the Hailo-8L (13 TOPS at 2.5W) or Google Coral USB Accelerator offer extreme power efficiency for always-on inference. For healthcare imaging on-premise servers, NVIDIA A40 or L40S GPUs running in a rack server provide the performance required for DICOM preprocessing and multi-model ensembles. ARM Cortex-based processors with embedded NPUs (Qualcomm Cloud AI 100, MediaTek Dimensity for mobile) are appropriate for smartphone-based CV applications in retail and field inspection.

Q: How long does it take to deploy a computer vision system in production?

A well-scoped CV deployment following the validate-then-scale approach takes 3 to 6 months from project start to first production system, and 6 to 12 months to full rollout across a facility or department. The timeline breaks down as: 4 to 6 weeks for hardware specification and procurement; 4 to 8 weeks for dataset collection, labelling, and model training; 2 to 4 weeks for model validation against production conditions (lighting variation, product variants, edge cases); 4 to 8 weeks for integration into existing operational workflows, alert systems, and reporting dashboards; and 2 to 4 weeks of parallel running (CV system and existing process running simultaneously) before cutover. The longest and most frequently underestimated phase is data collection and labelling — particularly for defect detection, where collecting sufficient examples of rare failure modes can take 6 to 12 weeks of production monitoring.
