Q: Did React Native 0.85 remove the Bridge?

The Bridge stopped being usable earlier: React Native 0.82 in October 2025 made the New Architecture the only option. The official 0.85 notes from April 2026 describe more legacy cleanup rather than a single removal, and later releases add flags to remove the interop layer. In practice, anything that only works through the old bridge path is on borrowed time.

Q: What is the React Native interop layer?

The interop layer is a compatibility shim that lets modules and views written for the old architecture run inside the New Architecture without being rewritten. It helped teams migrate gradually, but it has limits, for example no custom Shadow Nodes, and React Native is retiring it. Q: Why do events stop firing after the migration?

Old modules often emitted events with RCTEventEmitter or sendEvent without declaring them anywhere. Without the interop layer forwarding them, nothing crashes but the JavaScript listener never fires. Payment callbacks, Bluetooth and location updates are common victims. List every sendEvent in the old module and add a typed emitter for each one in the Codegen spec.

Q: Should I fork an abandoned library or replace it?

Fork it when the surface is small, a handful of methods, and the native SDK underneath is still sound: rewrite the binding as a TurboModule, ship it with patch-package and offer a PR upstream. Replace it when the surface is large, the native SDK is also stale, or a maintained alternative exists, because a fork is a permanent maintenance cost.

Q: How long does a bridge-removal migration take?

For a mid-size app with 40 to 80 native dependencies, three to eight custom modules and one or two custom native views, plan around six weeks: one week of audit, two for TurboModule rewrites, two for Fabric views or replacements, and one for release-build testing and a staged rollout. Custom views with their own measuring are the biggest variable.
