SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO vs SXO: 5 Layers (2026)

Q: What is the difference between SEO, AEO, GEO, AIO, and SXO?

They are five layers of one search-visibility funnel, not competing strategies. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) ranks your page in organic blue-link results and is the crawlable, authoritative foundation everything else draws from. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) wins the zero-click answer — featured snippets, "People Also Ask," and voice assistants like Siri and Alexa. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) earns citations inside answers that LLM-backed engines generate, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. AIO (AI Overview Optimization) targets inclusion in Google's AI Overviews / AI Mode summaries. SXO (Search Experience Optimization) is the only post-click layer — it optimises the experience after a visitor arrives so the visit converts, and its engagement signals feed back into ranking. The correct build order is SEO first, then the answer surfaces (AEO/GEO/AIO), then SXO.

Q: Does GEO or AIO replace SEO?

No — they sit on top of SEO and depend on it. Generative engines and AI Overviews extract from the same crawled, indexed, authoritative content that SEO produces; if your pages aren't crawlable, fast, and trustworthy, there is nothing for ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview to cite or summarise. What has changed is that ranking number one no longer guarantees the click, because answer surfaces increasingly sit above the blue links and resolve the query without a visit. So SEO is necessary but no longer sufficient: you still need the foundation, and then you layer AEO, GEO, and AIO to capture the answer surfaces, plus SXO to convert the clicks you do get. Treating GEO/AIO as a replacement for SEO is the most common and most damaging misconception — chasing AI citations on a site that isn't indexed is optimising for an audience that can't find you.

Q: What does AIO actually stand for? Why is it ambiguous?

AIO is the acronym to be careful with, because it has three meanings circulating. First, "AI Overview Optimization" — getting your page included and linked inside Google's AI Overviews / AI Mode, the AI-generated summary atop many search results; this is the visibility sense and the most useful definition. Second, "AI Optimization" — formatting content so any AI system can parse and reuse it (structured language, bullets, schema), which in practice overlaps almost entirely with GEO. Third, "Artificial Intelligence Optimization" — using AI tools like ChatGPT, Jasper, or SurferSEO to produce content faster, which is a content-creation workflow, not a visibility channel. The confusion matters: people argue past each other because they mean different things by the same three letters. The practical advice is to use AIO for the AI-Overview sense, and when someone says "we do AIO," ask which meaning — don't let a tool you use (an AI writer) get reported as a surface you optimise for.

Q: What is AEO and how do I optimise for it?

Answer Engine Optimization targets the zero-click answer: featured snippets, the "People Also Ask" box, and voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant) that read a single answer aloud. The mental shift is from ranking to being selected as the answer. Concrete tactics: phrase a heading as the exact question a user asks, then put a direct, self-contained answer of roughly 40–60 words immediately under it (that block is what gets lifted into the snippet); add an FAQ section marked up with FAQPage schema; target natural-language long-tail queries rather than terse keywords; and use Speakable schema so voice assistants know which passage to read. The caveat is that winning a zero-click answer can cannibalise your visit — the user gets the answer without clicking — so AEO pays off best when paired with brand presence and SXO, so the answers that do drive clicks convert.

Q: What makes generative engines (GEO) cite a page?

LLM-backed engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini extract rather than rank, so they cite content that is unambiguous to ground. The strongest signals: declarative sentences that begin with the entity and state a fact ("ColPali uses 1024 patch embeddings of 128 dimensions"), rather than hedged prose; tables of facts, which engines prefer because the grounding is unambiguous; named entities with versions and dates; sourced statistics with the source named inline; question-and-answer blocks (the FAQ schema is ingested directly by several engines); and clean, server-rendered HTML, because heavy client-side JavaScript often fails for non-Google crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot, silently removing you from the generative surface. You also must not block the AI crawlers in robots.txt. Track GEO by querying your target questions in each engine on a schedule and logging whether and how you're cited — citation share per engine is the metric, not blue-link rank.

Q: What is SXO and why do people skip it?

Search Experience Optimization is the only one of the five layers concerned with what happens after discovery: the experience a visitor has once they land on your page, and whether that visit converts. It merges classic SEO with UX and conversion-rate optimization. The signals are fast loading (mobile Core Web Vitals — LCP under 2.5 seconds, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200 milliseconds), a title that matches the content so there's no bait-and-switch, intuitive navigation, clear calls to action, and content that genuinely satisfies the intent that brought the user. Teams skip it because it doesn't feel like a "search" tactic — it's design and product work — yet it is where discovery turns into revenue, and Google's engagement signals (dwell time, whether users pogo-stick back to the results) feed back into ranking. That makes SXO both the conversion layer and a ranking input, which is why it's the most-skipped, highest-ROI layer of the five.

Q: Which should I prioritise first?

The order is fixed — SEO, then AEO/GEO/AIO, then SXO — but where you put your emphasis depends on your symptom. If you aren't indexed or ranking, fix SEO first: content matched to intent, technical health, and authority; there is no point optimising answer surfaces for a page that can't be found. If you rank but are losing clicks to answer boxes and AI summaries, add the answer layers: a question-shaped heading with a 40–60 word answer block, FAQ and Article schema, and fact-dense tables — one content pass that serves AEO, GEO, and AIO together because they share the same fixes. If traffic arrives but bounces without converting, fix SXO: mobile speed, intent match, and clear CTAs. The strategic point is that you don't run five separate projects — you build the content once, correctly structured, and it wins across all five surfaces, then you tune the layer your analytics says is leaking.

Q: Can one article be optimised for all five at once?

Yes — and it should be, because the layers share most of their requirements. A single well-built article wins all five when it: ranks on solid SEO fundamentals (authoritative, crawlable, fast); opens with a direct-answer block under a question heading for AEO; uses declarative fact-dense sentences, decision tables, dated citations, and clean HTML for GEO; carries Article, FAQPage, and Speakable structured data plus a first-viewport answer and freshness signals for AIO; and loads fast with intent-matched content and clear CTAs for SXO. This article is itself an example of that approach. The efficiency is the whole point: rather than five separate optimisation projects, you structure the content once to satisfy the foundation, the three answer surfaces, and the post-click experience simultaneously — which is exactly how AppScale builds its cornerstone guides.
