Vector Database Comparison 2026: Pinecone vs Weaviate vs Qdrant vs pgvector vs Edge Vector Store

Q: What is the best vector database for production RAG systems in 2026?

The best vector database depends on your deployment model. For maximum performance at scale, Qdrant offers the highest throughput per dollar. For hybrid keyword-plus-vector search, Weaviate is the strongest option. For minimal operational overhead, Pinecone's serverless model is ideal. For teams already running PostgreSQL with fewer than five million vectors, pgvector avoids adding infrastructure complexity. For mobile applications requiring offline RAG, Edge Vector Store runs the entire HNSW index on-device with sub-millisecond latency.

Q: How does Edge Vector Store compare to cloud vector databases like Pinecone?

Edge Vector Store and Pinecone serve fundamentally different deployment models. Pinecone is a fully managed cloud service optimised for server-side workloads at massive scale. Edge Vector Store runs entirely on mobile devices with no network dependency, delivering sub-millisecond search latency on up to 500K vectors. Choose Pinecone for cloud-scale retrieval and Edge Vector Store when data cannot leave the device, latency budgets are below five milliseconds, or offline capability is required.

Q: Can pgvector handle enterprise-scale vector search workloads?

pgvector is excellent for workloads up to approximately five million vectors on a single PostgreSQL node, with search latency of five to fifteen milliseconds at 95% recall. Beyond that scale, purpose-built vector databases like Qdrant or Weaviate offer significantly better performance through horizontal sharding. pgvector's primary advantage is architectural simplicity — vector search using your existing PostgreSQL infrastructure, security posture, and backup procedures.

Q: What is the cost difference between managed and self-hosted vector databases at scale?

At 50 million vectors with one million monthly queries, Pinecone's serverless pricing typically costs three to five times more than self-hosted Qdrant or Weaviate running on equivalent cloud infrastructure. Self-hosted solutions require engineering investment in operations, monitoring, and upgrades. The crossover point where self-hosting becomes cheaper is typically around 10 million vectors and 500,000 monthly queries, but varies based on your team's infrastructure maturity.

Q: How does on-device vector search work for mobile AI applications?

On-device vector search uses Edge Vector Store, a React Native library that compiles a C++ HNSW index engine directly into your mobile application. Vectors are stored in memory-mapped files on the device. Queries are processed through custom SIMD kernels with zero-copy JSI data transfer, achieving sub-millisecond latency. Pre-built indexes can be distributed as portable .evs pack files via CDN or app bundling. The device runs the full search pipeline locally — no server calls, no network latency, and complete data privacy.

Q: Which vector database is best for HIPAA or GDPR compliance?

For maximum data residency control, self-hosted Qdrant or Weaviate deployed in your own infrastructure provide complete control over data location and access. pgvector inherits your existing PostgreSQL compliance posture. Edge Vector Store offers the strongest guarantee — embedding data never leaves the physical device, eliminating server-side breach risk entirely. Pinecone operates in specific cloud regions with data processing agreements but may not satisfy all regulatory requirements for highly sensitive data.

Q: How do I migrate from one vector database to another?

Vector database migration involves exporting embeddings and metadata from the source system, transforming them into the target system's format, and bulk-loading them into the new index. The embeddings themselves are portable — they are just arrays of floating-point numbers. The main complexity is in metadata schema mapping and updating your application's retrieval queries. Design your retrieval pipeline with an abstraction layer between your application logic and the vector database client to make future migrations a configuration change rather than a code rewrite.

Q: What is the practical vector limit for on-device search on mobile?

With Edge Vector Store using I8 quantization at 768 dimensions, a 100K vector index requires approximately 83 MB of device memory. A 500K vector index requires approximately 400 MB. For most mobile applications, 100K to 250K vectors at 384 dimensions provides an excellent balance of capability and resource usage. The .evs pack format allows you to ship domain-specific subsets of a larger knowledge base, keeping the on-device index focused and efficient while the full corpus remains available server-side.
