Microsoft HoloLens release notes state that as of December 2024 HoloLens devices are no longer manufactured. The November 2024 update was the final feature release, and monthly security servicing continues through December 2027. Under the UK product security regime, the minimum security update period runs to 28 February 2028 for units bought before 28 February 2025.

Q: Did Meta stop selling Quest headsets to businesses?

Yes. Meta announced it stopped selling Horizon managed services and commercial SKUs of Meta Quest effective 20 February 2026. Existing managed services licences became free, and existing customers keep support for the current product until 4 January 2030. Consumer Quest devices remain on sale, but the dedicated business programme is effectively in maintenance mode.

Q: Where does spatial computing actually pay off in the enterprise?

It pays where a worker needs both hands on the task and the information they need is tied to a physical place or object: remote expert support for field service, guided assembly in high-mix production, and training for rare or hazardous procedures. Inspection is mixed. Virtual meetings and general office productivity do not justify a headset fleet; a laptop does that better.

Q: What should replace HoloLens 2 in an enterprise programme?

Start from the job rather than the device. Keep procedures and 3D content in open formats in your own system, build interaction code on OpenXR where the target supports it, and evaluate current devices on comfort, passthrough and camera policy, battery and device management for that job. Price the cost of the next exit before committing, because two major vendors have left in eighteen months.

Q: Does Apple Vision Pro support OpenXR?

Apple is not listed among OpenXR adopters with conformant products on the Khronos OpenXR page, which lists Google, Meta, Microsoft, Qualcomm, HTC, Varjo and others. Apple documents its own enterprise APIs for visionOS business apps. If visionOS is in scope, plan a separate rendering layer and keep business logic and content below it so both paths share them.

Q: How do you make an XR programme survive a vendor leaving?

Own the stable layers: the job definition and its metric, the content library in glTF or USD with procedures as structured data, and the fleet process. Rent the volatile layers: the runtime and the device. Avoid authoring procedures inside a vendor tool without export. Then a platform exit costs a device swap and some rendering work rather than months of re-authoring expert content.

Q: How do you build a business case for enterprise AR headsets?

Measure the job metric, such as avoided specialist travel, first-time fix rate, error rate or time to competence, against a baseline from the pilot. Cost devices, device management, content authoring, work-order integration and replacement cycles. Then add the cost of moving content and retraining if the platform exits in year three. A case that still works with that line included is sound.

Q: When should a company not deploy XR headsets?

Do not deploy when the task does not need both hands, when the information is not tied to a location, or when a tablet or screen at the workstation would deliver the same guidance. Also avoid programmes justified by virtual meetings. Headsets add battery logistics, hygiene, comfort limits and platform risk, so they only pay when the hands-free spatial benefit is large.
