Q: Do Indian product companies need both ISO 27001 and SOC 2?

Usually yes, if they sell to both Indian enterprise or public-sector buyers and to US or global SaaS customers. Indian banks, insurers, public-sector undertakings and government tenders, along with many European and APAC enterprises, ask for an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate because it is an internationally recognised certification against a fixed standard that can be shown publicly. US enterprise procurement, particularly for SaaS, asks for a SOC 2 Type II report because that is what their vendor-risk process is built around. The two are not interchangeable in the eyes of the auditors, but they assess largely the same controls, so the correct approach is one control set and one evidence pipeline that both attestations read from, sequenced by where the next twelve months of revenue will come from. Building two separate programmes is the expensive mistake.

Q: What is the difference between ISO 27001 and SOC 2?

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certifies that an organisation operates an information security management system: a defined scope, a risk assessment and treatment process, a Statement of Applicability selecting from the 93 Annex A controls grouped into organisational, people, physical and technological themes, internal audit and management review. An accredited certification body issues a certificate valid for three years with surveillance audits in years one and two. SOC 2 is an attestation report issued by a licensed CPA firm under AICPA standards, stating whether the controls you described meet the Trust Services Criteria — Security is mandatory, with Availability, Processing Integrity, Confidentiality and Privacy optional. A Type I covers control design at a point in time; a Type II covers operating effectiveness over a window of typically three to twelve months. There is no certificate; the report is shared with customers under NDA and is generally refreshed annually.

Q: Should we get ISO 27001 or SOC 2 first?

Sequence by revenue geography. If the next twelve months of pipeline is US or global SaaS procurement, start with SOC 2: a Type I in the first two or three months and a Type II report at month nine to twelve. If the pipeline is Indian BFSI, public sector or European enterprise, start with ISO 27001. If the company faces both markets in its first year, ISO first is usually cheaper overall, because the ISO risk assessment and Statement of Applicability produce exactly the control inventory SOC 2 will need, whereas a team that starts from a SOC 2 checklist frequently has to retrofit the risk process later for its ISO Stage 1 audit. Whichever comes first, schedule the second attestation six to nine months later so it reads from an evidence pipeline that has already produced a full observation window, and expect it to cost auditor fees only.

Q: Why is the AICPA warning about fast SOC 2 reports in 2026?

Because the market for cheap, quick SOC 2 reports is eroding the value of the attestation. In February 2026 the Journal of Accountancy reported the chair of the AICPA's SOC 2 working group warning that "fast and easy may come at the expense of quality and objectivity", describing compliance-automation vendors that promise reports in weeks through networks of small CPA firms. A report from a firm caught by that scrutiny may not survive an informed buyer's security review.

Q: How do ISO 27001 Annex A controls map to SOC 2 Trust Services Criteria?

Most technological and organisational Annex A controls map onto the SOC 2 Common Criteria families CC6 to CC8, with the management-system clauses mapping onto CC1 to CC5. As illustrative examples, Annex A 5.15 access control and 8.5 secure authentication map to CC6.1 through CC6.3 on logical access; 8.15 logging and 8.16 monitoring map to CC7.2 and CC7.3 on detection and monitoring; 5.24 through 5.28 on incident management map to CC7.4 and CC7.5 on response and recovery; and 8.9 configuration management maps to CC7.1 and CC8.1 on change management. The mapping is not the difficult part and can be bought from any compliance platform. The difficult part is making the evidence column of that mapping fill itself from the systems that run the controls, so that both an ISO surveillance auditor and a SOC 2 Type II auditor can draw complete populations from the same store.

Q: What is a compliance evidence pipeline and why does it matter more than the platform?

An evidence pipeline is scheduled automation that collects proof of control operation from the systems of record — the identity provider for user lists and MFA state, the cloud provider for configuration snapshots, the ticketing system for access approvals, source control for branch protection and review enforcement, the logging platform for retention settings — and writes each artefact to immutable storage with a timestamp, a content hash and both the Annex A identifier and the SOC 2 criterion it supports. It matters because a SOC 2 Type II auditor samples from a population over a window and an ISO surveillance auditor needs operating evidence across a year; screenshots collected by hand before an audit satisfy neither, and templated evidence is now specifically what AICPA peer reviewers are told to look for. A compliance-automation platform is a useful consumer of that pipeline and a good auditor portal, but it should not be the system of record for the controls, and its vendor should not choose your auditor.

Q: How does ISO 27001 or SOC 2 relate to India's DPDP Act and CERT-In directions?

Neither certificate is accepted by an Indian regulator as compliance, but the controls behind them are most of the answer. The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 were notified on 14 November 2025 with an eighteen-month phased implementation, so substantive obligations on data fiduciaries such as security safeguards, breach notification and retention arrive in 2027. CERT-In's directions under Section 70B of the IT Act have since 2022 required reporting of specified incidents within six hours and retention of logs for a rolling 180 days. An ISMS built on Annex A already has incident-management controls (5.24 to 5.28), logging and retention controls (8.15, 8.16) and access controls that produce the evidence those obligations require; the same rows in the control inventory should carry a DPDP or CERT-In mapping alongside the SOC 2 criterion, so that one pipeline answers the auditor, the regulator and the customer questionnaire.

Q: How much do ISO 27001 and SOC 2 cost for a small Indian SaaS company?

External costs vary with scope, auditor and geography, so treat figures as indicative. For an early-stage scope limited to the product system boundary, SOC 2 Type I plus Type II auditor fees are commonly quoted in the range of $20,000 to $60,000 in the first year before any tooling, and ISO 27001 certification-body fees for Stage 1, Stage 2 and the first surveillance audit typically fall in the low tens of thousands of dollars, with Indian certification bodies often at the lower end. The larger cost is internal: the engineering time to implement controls and build the evidence pipeline, which is spent once if the control set is shared. The test of a well-run programme is that the second attestation adds only auditor fees; if it adds a second controls project, a second tool or a second set of policies, the first programme was built as a checklist rather than as a control set.
