Q: How do I evaluate a RAG system properly?

Evaluate it as two systems, not one, because a RAG answer can fail in two fundamentally different ways — retrieval hands the model the wrong context, or the model ignores or contradicts the right context it was given — and a single "is the answer good?" score cannot distinguish them, which leaves you unable to fix anything. The proper approach is component-wise evaluation across four metrics. For retrieval: context recall (did retrieval surface the passages that actually contain the answer) and context precision (are the retrieved passages relevant and well-ranked, or is the model being distracted by noise). For generation: faithfulness or groundedness (is every claim in the answer supported by the retrieved context, or did the model hallucinate) and answer relevance (does the answer actually address the question asked). You compute these per query over a golden set, then read them together to localize failures: low context recall means retrieval missed the answer and you must fix retrieval before touching the prompt; high context recall but low faithfulness means the model hallucinated despite having the right context, a pure generation bug; good faithfulness but low answer relevance means the answer is grounded but off-topic, a prompt or task-framing problem. Only after the component metrics do you read the end-to-end answer quality, now with the ability to explain any failure. Around the metrics you need a harness: a golden set of representative query-context-answer examples from real traffic (including hard, adversarial, and unanswerable queries), scorers (deterministic where possible for retrieval, validated LLM-as-judge for faithfulness and relevance), and the whole thing running in CI so every change is regression-tested. It matters most among the RAG metrics because it is the metric of trust: the single most damaging RAG failure is a fluent, confident answer that is wrong, because users cannot tell it is wrong (it reads authoritative), it erodes confidence in the whole system when discovered, and in regulated or high-stakes domains it creates real liability. A RAG system exists precisely to ground answers in a trusted knowledge base rather than the model's parametric memory, so an answer that departs from the retrieved context has defeated the purpose of the architecture — it is hallucinating with extra steps. Faithfulness is also diagnostically pivotal: read together with context recall, it separates the two big failure classes. If context recall is high (the right context was retrieved) but faithfulness is low (the answer still contains unsupported claims), you have a pure generation problem — the model is not using the context it was given — and the fix is in generation (a stronger model, a better prompt that instructs grounding, an output guardrail that checks claims against context), not in retrieval. Measuring faithfulness typically uses an LLM-as-judge that decomposes the answer into claims and checks each against the retrieved passages, which is why it can be scored without a hand-written gold answer for every query, though the judge must be validated against human ratings. Practically, faithfulness should be a monitored production metric with an alert threshold, not just an offline number, because a drop in faithfulness is a direct early signal of the failure mode that most damages user trust.

Q: What is the difference between context recall and context precision in RAG?

They are the two halves of retrieval quality and they fail differently, so you need both. Context recall asks: of the information needed to answer the question, how much did retrieval actually surface — did the retrieved passages contain the answer? Low context recall is a miss: the right passage was in your knowledge base but retrieval did not return it (bad chunking split the answer, the embedding did not capture the query intent, the retrieval method was too blunt for a specific-detail query), so the model never had a chance and no prompt or generation improvement can help. Context precision asks: of the passages retrieval returned, how many are actually relevant, and are the relevant ones ranked highly? Low context precision is noise: retrieval returned the right passage but buried it among irrelevant ones, so the model is distracted by off-topic context, which both degrades answer quality and wastes tokens and money. The two trade off — you can boost recall by retrieving more passages, but that often lowers precision by dragging in noise, and boosting precision by retrieving fewer can drop recall by cutting the answer. Reading them together tells you what to fix: low recall points at the retrieval method, chunking, or embeddings (consider hybrid search, better chunking, or late-interaction retrieval for specific-token queries); low precision points at ranking (add or improve a reranker to push the relevant passages to the top and filter noise). Both are prerequisites for good generation: the model needs the answer to be present (recall) and not drowned in irrelevance (precision). And crucially, both are retrieval metrics — if they are healthy but the answer is still wrong, the failure is in generation (faithfulness or relevance), which is exactly the localization that component-wise evaluation gives you and that a single end-to-end score cannot.
