Multiply that by each connector. Tools like Hightouch and Census exist specifically to absorb this maintenance, and for more than one non-trivial destination they are almost always the better economy — the same build-versus-buy logic that already made teams stop hand-writing inbound ELT connectors. Build in-house only when you have a single destination with a stable API and modest volume, or a hard data-residency or compliance constraint that rules out a vendor, or a write pattern so specialised no product supports it. The clearest tell that you have crossed the line: the moment you are writing your second connector, or your first one needs proper delete handling and per-row error reporting, you are rebuilding a product that already exists, on a write path unforgiving enough that a mature tool's accumulated edge-case handling is worth paying for.

Five recur across failed deployments.
