Evaluate it as two systems, not one, because a RAG answer can fail in two fundamentally different ways — retrieval hands the model the wrong context, or the model ignores or contradicts the right context it was given — and a single "is the answer good?" score cannot distinguish them, which leaves you unable to fix anything. The proper approach is component-wise evaluation across four metrics.
