Q: What is a time-series foundation model and how is it different from classical forecasting?

A time-series foundation model is a large transformer pretrained on enormous quantities of temporal data across many domains, which can then produce forecasts for a series it has never seen — zero-shot, with no training on your data, no feature engineering, and no per-series model. The contrast with classical forecasting is structural. The classical approach (statistical methods like ARIMA and exponential smoothing, or per-series gradient-boosted and neural models) requires you to fit a model to each series: engineer features (lags, seasonality indicators, holiday flags), tune hyperparameters, and retrain on a schedule as new data arrives — so an estate of ten thousand SKUs means ten thousand fitted models and a pipeline maintaining them forever. The foundation-model approach inverts this: you pass the historical series to a pretrained model and it returns a forecast immediately, having learned general temporal dynamics (trend, seasonality, intermittency, level shifts) from its pretraining corpus. Technically, models like Chronos tokenise continuous values through scaling and quantisation so a language-model architecture can be trained on temporal sequences, which is why these models inherit transformer capabilities and transformer costs alike. The practical consequences that matter operationally: maintenance collapses from N models to one serving path; cold start largely dissolves because a new series with two weeks of history still gets a credible forecast from pretrained priors, exactly the case where classical per-series models fail worst; and feature engineering shifts from encoding seasonality (now learned) to supplying business context as covariates. What does not change is that it remains a production ML system — data quality, drift, evaluation, and serving infrastructure all still apply.

Q: Why does uncertainty quantification matter more than point-forecast accuracy?

Because almost every decision made from a forecast is made against a range, not a mean — inventory levels, safety stock, staffing, capacity provisioning, and financial commitments are all set by how bad the downside could be — and the cost of being wrong is usually asymmetric, so a calibrated interval is more decision-useful than a slightly better point estimate. Consider inventory: under-forecasting causes stockouts (lost revenue, customer defection), over-forecasting causes carrying cost and waste, and these costs are rarely symmetric, so the right order quantity comes from a quantile of the predictive distribution chosen to reflect that asymmetry — not from the mean forecast. The same logic governs capacity planning (under-provisioning risks outages, over-provisioning wastes spend) and staffing. If your model produces only a point forecast, the decision layer has to invent uncertainty (a static safety factor), which is usually wrong in both directions across a heterogeneous estate. What to evaluate: calibration (do the stated intervals contain the actual value at the stated rate — is a 90% interval right 90% of the time), sharpness (are the intervals as narrow as they can be while staying calibrated, since a trivially wide interval is calibrated and useless), and quantile-specific accuracy at the quantiles your decisions actually use, measured with proper scoring rules for probabilistic forecasts. Models differ substantially here — some are explicitly probabilistic-first and designed for uncertainty quantification, others produce distributions of varying quality — so this belongs in your selection criteria, not as an afterthought. The failure mode worth naming: a confident wrong number is more expensive than an honest wide one, because downstream systems and humans act on stated precision. Evaluate uncertainty, use the quantiles the decision needs, and treat the interval as the deliverable.
